Azure Active Directory Is Now Microsoft Entra ID
What changed
Microsoft renamed Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) to Microsoft Entra ID in 2023. Older FileWave instructions, screenshots, Microsoft URLs, APIs, and configuration labels may still say Azure AD or AAD. Those names normally refer to the same identity service, not a separate FileWave integration.
Why Microsoft changed the name
Microsoft placed the service within the Microsoft Entra product family to give its identity and access products a common name and to reflect identity security across cloud and on-premises environments. This was a product-name change, not a replacement identity platform.
What administrators need to do
The rename did not require a tenant migration or a new FileWave configuration. Existing deployments and integrations continued to work. Use Microsoft Entra ID in current documentation, but preserve an older product label when an API, command, field, or screen still uses it.
Microsoft kept existing login URLs, APIs, PowerShell cmdlets, and Microsoft Authentication Library (MSAL) behavior during the rename. Administrators could continue to use the Azure portal, Microsoft 365 admin center, and Microsoft Entra admin center. Features, licensing terms, service-level agreements, product certifications, support, and pricing did not change solely because of the new name. Standalone plan names became Microsoft Entra ID Free, P1, and P2, and Entra ID continued to be included in applicable Microsoft 365 plans.
Names that did not change
The Entra ID rename did not rename these products and developer tools:
- Microsoft Authentication Library (MSAL)
- Microsoft Graph and Microsoft Graph PowerShell
- Windows Server Active Directory
- Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) and Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS)
- Azure Active Directory B2C
- Deprecated or retired Azure AD features whose historical names remain in documentation
