PHP2Shell Vulnerabilities: FileWave Impact and Customer-Deployed PHP

Assessment date: October 21, 2026

FileWave impact

FileWave and its supplied appliance images are not affected by PHP2Shell. FileWave does not use or include PHP, and the appliance images do not use PHP as supplied.

What is PHP2Shell?

PHP2Shell refers to two critical PHP vulnerabilities disclosed on October 21, 2026: CVE-2026-109618 (out-of-memory corruption) and CVE-2026-109619 (stale global state). They can allow unauthenticated remote code execution in affected PHP web-serving environments. Exposure and exploitability depend on the PHP version, server integration, application, and configuration.

Customer-deployed PHP

FileWave does not have visibility into all applications, packages, and custom content that customers deploy through the platform. This includes customer-created Filesets and content obtained through tools such as AutoPkg and WinGet. Customers should check whether their deployed software includes PHP.

For example, your organization may have deployed a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL/MariaDB, and PHP) to developer computers. The PHP component in that stack may require an update even though FileWave itself is not affected. Review both the PHP already installed on those computers and the package or image used for future deployments.

  • If you use affected PHP software, apply the vendor's security update. The PHP project identifies 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, and 8.5.12 as patched releases in their respective branches. Use a fixed release appropriate for your application, or a distribution/vendor package explicitly confirmed to include the fixes.
  • Update existing installations and your deployment content so future deployments do not reinstall a vulnerable build. Follow vendor instructions to restart or redeploy affected PHP services and verify the running version/package.
  • For bundled PHP, unsupported branches, or systems that cannot be updated promptly, follow the software vendor's and PHP project's mitigation guidance. Do not assume that a web application firewall replaces patching.
