Microsoft WinGet Overview
What the WinGet Fileset does
Microsoft WinGet is the Windows Package Manager command-line client for discovering, installing, upgrading, and removing applications. FileWave's WinGet Fileset assistant lets administrators search the repository and build a managed Windows deployment without writing the WinGet command sequence by hand.
When to use it
Use a WinGet Fileset when the application is available from a configured WinGet source and its installer supports the required unattended behavior. Use a traditional Fileset when you must package a private installer, control additional files or scripts, or validate an installer outside the WinGet source.
How
In FileWave Central, use the WinGet search assistant to find the intended package and create the Fileset. Confirm the package identifier and publisher before deployment; similar display names do not guarantee the same package.
- FileWave installs or updates WinGet when the managed device requires it.
- Initial deployment installs the current package version available to WinGet.
- Verification can upgrade the application when a newer package is available.
- Removal of the Deployment can uninstall the application when that package supports silent uninstallation.
Use the following articles for the full package lifecycle. Start with a pilot Deployment, verify the installed package and version in inventory, and test upgrade and removal behavior before using those options broadly:
- Finding packages in the WinGet repository
- Installing a package with WinGet
- Upgrading a package with WinGet
- Uninstalling a package with WinGet
