Apple Classroom Deployment Scenarios

These scenarios describe MDM-created Apple Classroom classes managed by FileWave. They need device enrollment, teacher and student identity data, class data, and the correct device-to-person or cart-to-class associations.

Before choosing a rollout order, follow Use Apple Classroom with FileWave for the setup overview and review Apple's MDM-created class requirements. Student devices must be supervised, Bluetooth must be enabled, and the Wi-Fi network must allow the required client-to-client communication. Teacher devices must not be configured as Shared iPad.

  • All devices enrolled in FileWave
  • Teacher devices identified, with the Apple Classroom app installed
  • One-to-one student devices associated with the correct student
  • Cart Groups configured for shared devices
  • Class data, including teachers, students, and carts, loaded into FileWave
  • The FileWave-generated education configuration profile delivered to the teacher and student devices assigned to each class

Complete these parts of the deployment:

  • Enroll devices
  • Import SIS data (classes, teachers, students)
  • Associate one-to-one and teacher devices with users, and associate shared-device carts with classes
  • Deploy Classroom app to teacher devices

FileWave does not require one fixed order. Choose a sequence that matches when devices and SIS data become available.

Example: enroll shared carts first

  1. Enroll Cart devices and create carts
  2. Import SIS data
  3. Associate classes to carts
  4. Create placeholders for teacher devices
  5. Associate each teacher device to its teacher
  6. Deploy Classroom to teacher devices
  7. If you also have one-to-one student devices, enable automatic username matching in FileWave Classroom preferences and confirm that the MDM authentication username matches the SIS identifier before students unbox and enroll their assigned iPad. This is separate from the cart-to-class mapping used by shared devices.

Example: prepare identity and class data first

When SIS data and device assignments are known before enrollment, prepare the structure first:

  1. Import SIS data
  2. Import placeholders for 1:1 devices
  3. Enroll cart devices
  4. Associate classes with carts and devices with people
  5. Deploy Classroom to teacher devices
  6. Enroll one-to-one devices

You can make incremental changes later. For example, when a new student arrives, add the student and device-to-person association without rebuilding the existing classes or carts.

For person-to-device and cart-to-class mapping rules, see Classroom SIS Data. Invalid mappings are not used to generate education profiles. Review FileWave Classroom Limitations before assigning carts and class apps.

Whichever sequence you choose, check one class before expanding the rollout. After its devices receive their education profiles, open Classroom on the teacher device and confirm that the expected class and students appear. If they do not, check the imported roster, device mappings, profile delivery and Apple's network requirements. Installing the Classroom app alone does not complete the setup.
