Classroom – Shared iPad
Terms and Definitions
Classroom is Apple's app for teachers to guide students using supported iPad devices and Mac computers. Depending on the class type and configuration, teachers can:
- Lock student devices
- Start application or Safari on a given web page on student devices
- Observe (without interaction) student devices
- Pre-assign shared iPad to students
- Display student iPad screen on Apple TVs
- Only one user is logged in at a time
- Personal data are downloaded from iCloud on first login on the device and cached on the device
- You can configure how many "user caches" can be stored on the device
- Managed Apple IDs are required
Apple School Manager connects education organizations with Automated Device Enrollment, Apps and Books, student information systems, and Managed Apple Accounts.
- Assigns organization-owned devices to connected MDM servers through Automated Device Enrollment
- Provides Apps and Books content management
- Can integrate student information system data
- Manages organization-owned Managed Apple Accounts
One-to-One (1:1) context - this is a deployment model where a person is getting a device that is not shared with another person.
Cart - this is a Group of devices that usually stay in one classroom, and that are shared by students. They do not have to actually be stored in a cart; this is just a logical grouping that we chose to call a Cart.
While Classroom and Shared iPad share the same underlying concepts, it is not mandatory to use both together:
- Classroom only can be used in 1:1 context without Shared iPad
- Shared iPad can be used without a teacher running Classroom
Current requirements
Apple maintains separate requirements for each Classroom class type. For classes created through MDM, review Classroom requirements for classes created with an MDM solution before deployment.
- MDM-created classes require all participating devices to be enrolled in the organization's MDM service.
- Bluetooth and Wi-Fi client-to-client communication must be available for the documented Classroom workflow.
- Student devices must be supervised for MDM-created classes.
- Shared iPad devices require at least 32 GB of storage and Managed Apple Accounts.
How it works: Classroom
- For an MDM-created class, FileWave delivers an education configuration profile to each assigned teacher and student device.
- The class configuration identifies the class, teachers, students, and optional Shared iPad device groups.
- Classroom communication requires Bluetooth, Wi-Fi client-to-client communication, and the network ports listed in Apple's current requirements.
- Assign the organization-owned iPad to the FileWave MDM server in Apple School Manager.
- Enable Shared iPad in the Automated Device Enrollment profile before the device activates.
- After activation and enrollment, the device prepares the Shared iPad sign-in experience.
- Users sign in with Managed Apple Accounts owned by the organization.
- Device space will be shared:
- iPadOS
- Common apps, media
- For each user, local cache of personal data
- When user logs in / out, data are synchronized via iCloud.
