Deploy Audacity on macOS

What this recipe does

Audacity is free, open-source audio software for macOS, Windows, and Linux. This recipe deploys the macOS application with a FileWave Fileset.

Current Audacity builds include LAME for MP3 import and export. Do not deploy a separate LAME library for a current Audacity installation. If users need additional formats such as M4A or WMA, review Audacity's current FFmpeg installation guidance and deploy FFmpeg as a separately tested dependency.

Requirements

  • FileWave Central
  • The current macOS download from Audacity
  • One representative pilot Mac for installation and audio-format testing

Deploy Audacity

  1. Download the current macOS release from Audacity and confirm that it supports the macOS versions and processor architectures in your fleet.
  2. Open the downloaded disk image and copy Audacity.app to the administrator Mac's Applications folder.
  3. Drag Audacity.app from Applications into the FileWave Central Filesets view to create an application Fileset.
  4. Create a Deployment to one pilot Mac, run Model Update, and confirm that the Fileset completes successfully.
  5. Launch Audacity on the pilot Mac and test MP3 import and export. If you also deploy FFmpeg, test each additional format your users require before expanding the Deployment.

Legacy LAME Fileset

The attachment and screenshots below are historical. They document the separate LAME Fileset used with older Audacity releases and should not be used for a current deployment. Keep them only when troubleshooting an existing legacy Fileset or an older supported Audacity workflow.

  1. Download the historical template: Audacity Plugin - LAME-Template.fileset.zip.
  2. The first screenshot shows the imported template before its placeholder library was replaced.
  3. The second screenshot shows the older Fileset after the locally installed LAME files were added.
