Duplicating Smart Groups

What

Duplicate an existing Smart Group when you need another group with similar report criteria. This preserves the original while giving you a separate copy to rename and adjust.

When/Why

This is especially useful when several Smart Groups use the same Custom Field but match different values, such as one group per department, location, or device state.

Consider the following:

We have a smart group for "IT" based on a custom field called "Department":

Duplicate the IT Smart Group, rename the copy for HR, and change its criteria in Reports (formerly Queries) from IT to HR. The screenshot and video below show this pattern.

How

In FileWave Central:

1. Right-click the Smart Group you want to duplicate.
2. Choose Duplicate Smart Group....
3. Give the duplicate a unique name.
4. Edit the duplicated report criteria so they match the intended devices.
5. Save the Smart Group and confirm its membership before using it for a Deployment.

Only the criteria are copied. Direct Associations or Deployments assigned to the original Smart Group are not copied to the duplicate. A duplicate placed beneath another group can still inherit Deployments from that parent, so verify both membership and inherited targeting before rollout.
